Workaway, The Budget Traveler’s Secret

I had been traveling for a long time before I heard about Workaway. When I finally heard about the program I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard about it sooner or I didn’t know more people who knew about it. I’m convinced that Workaway is a secret that only Australian’s know about and want to keep this sweet program to themselves. If you have ever traveled you know that Australians are everywhere and most are traveling for long periods of time. Workaway is a great way to travel on a budget for long periods of time and get unique experience living in different cultures.

So, what is Workaway? Workaway is a program where you go and live with a family, group, or an individual and work for them. The hours of work range from about 3-5 hours a day for 3-5 days a week. However, in some instances you can actually earn a salary for working more hours. In exchange for working you get housing accommodations as well as food accommodations. If you are looking to travel on a budget there is no better way to go about getting free room and board along with your meals for the day.

To begin the process you pay $29 a year for a single person or $38 dollars a year as a couple or group of two friends. This memberships gets you signed up to be a host or to be a workaway. Once you are enrolled you can start applying for all of the unique jobs around the world. From helping train bobsled dogs in Northern Norway to working at a hostel in Costa Rica or helping build homes in Africa, Workaway is full of opportunity.

The website is based similarly to Couchsurfing and Yelp. Each host and workaway participant gets rated and goes through an application process to be reviewed by the host to see if you would be a good fit for the job. It is important to do your research and read the review of hosts before going there. To ensure you have the best possible time make sure to know what you are getting yourself into and the work that is expected of you, because it differs from host to host.

Currently on Workaway there are over 1,000 hosts around the world in 35 different countries. Workaway provides ideal accommodation for those looking to travel the world on a budget. You can live with people from that culture and get a real sense of what it is like to live in that country. If you are trying to learn a second language this is a great opportunity to get a home stay with locals and practice learning that language. I encourage my readers to visit the Workaway site and see some of the opportunities, make sure you browse the site before purchasing a membership.
